Hunted

For centuries they sought her out,

Hunted her with the intention of destroying her.

Her wisdom and strength something they feared,

Her spirit and flame contagious amongst the rest.

Healing and creating they were known as witches

One by one they were bound and beaten by their rules.

Wisdom forgotten, strength surrendered

Flames reduced to embers just to survive.

The last one found, she didn’t resist

She walked, head held high to the pire.

She lit the match and started the flames that consumed her body,

Her sisters watched as she burned and fell to ash.

In rage and fury, long cooling embers ignited;

Like wildfire their strength grew as it spread.

United they stand where she fell.

In her wisdom she knew her sacrifice would illicit change.

And when the men weren’t looking,

She rose again.
